The Simple Fix List: 20 Common Vape Problems Solved

This section covers the 20 most frequent issues people have with their vapes. Each answer is easy to read, with simple steps and clear product tips from our store.

1. Device Not Turning On

When you press the button and the screen stays black, it can be scary. The simplest reasons are usually related to power or a safety lock. If your vape does nothing, the battery is probably dead or the safety feature is on.

How to Fix:

  • Check the Safety Lock: Almost all vapes need five quick clicks of the fire button to turn on or off. Click the button five times quickly (in under two seconds). If the screen lights up, the device was simply locked.
  • Charge It: Plug the vape into a working charger and wall plug. Don’t use your computer’s USB port; the power is usually too low. Leave it for at least 30 minutes. If the charging light comes on, the device was just dead.
  • Check External Batteries: If your device uses separate batteries, make sure you put them in the right way (the + and − sides must match). Look for tears on the battery wraps and think about buying newer batteries. Our shop sells reliable batteries that will make your vape turn on better and last longer.

2. Weak or No Vapor

You take a big puff, but the cloud is tiny, or even worse, nothing comes out. This beats the purpose of vaping and usually means there’s a problem with the power or the coil. If the coil isn’t getting hot enough, it can’t turn the liquid into vapor well, which leads to weak puffs.

How to Fix:

  • Raise the Power (Wattage/Voltage): Look at the recommended power range printed on the side of your coil (like 40W–60W). If your vape is set too low (say, 25W), turn it up slowly until you see more vapor.
  • Check and Tighten the Coil: Make sure the coil head is screwed tightly into the bottom of the tank, and the tank is screwed firmly onto the vape. A loose connection stops full power from reaching the coil.
  • Replace the Coil: Coils wear out over time and get blocked. If you’ve used the coil for more than two weeks, the cotton is likely past its best. A fresh, new coil is the surest fix for weak vapor. We have all the major coil brands to give you the best vapor and flavor.

3. Burnt Taste

This is the worst part of vaping. It tastes like burnt popcorn or dry cotton. This is a clear sign that the cotton inside your coil is burning. This is called a “dry hit” and happens when the cotton is not wet enough with e-liquid.

How to Fix:

  • Wet Your Coils First (Important!): Always prime a new coil. Put 5–10 drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton spots you can see on the coil head until they look wet.
  • Wait Before Vaping: After filling your tank with a new, wetted coil, let it sit for at least five to ten minutes before your first puff. This wait allows the thick e-liquid to fully soak the cotton.
  • Check E-Liquid Levels: If your tank is almost empty, the cotton spots may be open to the air, causing the cotton to dry out fast. Keep your tank filled above those cotton holes!
  • Lower Your Power: If you are vaping at very high power, you might be burning the e-liquid faster than the cotton can soak it up. Drop your power a little to slow the heating.

4. Leaking E-Liquid

No one likes sticky pockets! Leaking tanks are messy and annoying. Leaks happen when e-liquid escapes through the air holes, usually because of a broken seal or parts that are not put together right.

How to Fix:

  • Check the O-Rings (Seals): Take your tank apart and look closely at all the rubber O-rings. If one is squeezed, ripped, or missing, it will leak. We sell replacement O-ring kits.
  • Tighten Parts Gently: Make sure the coil, the top part, and the bottom are finger-tight. Don’t overtighten, as this can actually damage the O-rings and make the leak worse.
  • Be Gentle When Puffing: Take a firm, steady puff. A very gentle or weak puff can sometimes pull liquid into the coil without turning it to vapor, causing the coil to overflow and leak out the air hole.
  • Fill Correctly: Don’t overfill your tank. When closing the top of a top-fill tank, a small pressure change can force liquid out. Close the air holes before filling and open them again once the top is closed.

5. Spitback or Popping Sounds

Does your vape sound like tiny fireworks? Are hot drops of e-liquid flying into your mouth? That is spitback. It happens when e-liquid gathers on top of the coil instead of soaking into the cotton.

How to Fix:

  • The “Flick” Method: Before you take a puff, gently flick your tank (with the vape attached) downward a few times over a paper towel. This gets rid of extra liquid from the coil.
  • Quick Pulse the Button: Before you inhale, press the fire button for a quick half-second pulse. This heats the coil and turns any gathered liquid into vapor before you take your full puff, stopping the harsh boiling.
  • Use Thicker E-Liquid: If your e-liquid is very thin (high PG), it will soak in too fast and is more likely to cause flooding. Switching to a thicker, high-VG liquid (like 70% VG/30% PG) will often stop spitback. Find our premium liquids at the E-Liquid Bar.
  • Clean the Center Tube: Use a rolled-up piece of paper towel to clean the inside of the tank’s center tube (the chimney) to clear up liquid that has gathered there.

6. Auto-Firing (Vape Activates on Its Own)

This is a serious safety risk where the device fires without you pressing the button. It is rare but usually caused by a sticky button or a broken part inside.

How to Fix:

  • Immediate Action: Lock or Turn Off: If your vape starts firing by itself, immediately turn it off (five clicks) or remove the batteries. Safety first!
  • Clean the Button: The fire button might be stuck because e-liquid leaked into it. Gently clean around the button with a dry cotton swab. Do not use water or cleaning liquid.
  • Check for Internal Leakage: If your tank leaked a lot, e-liquid might have gotten onto the circuit board. If cleaning the button doesn’t work, the device needs repair or replacement. We offer discounts for trade-ins on new devices if yours is damaged too badly to fix.

7. Poor Battery Life

If you are charging your device all the time, your battery might be failing, or your settings might be too high. All batteries naturally weaken over time, making them last for shorter periods.

How to Fix:

  • Reduce Power: Vaping at higher power settings (80W and above) uses up the battery much faster. Lowering your setting by 10W–20W can clearly make your battery last longer.
  • Buy Better Batteries: If you use separate batteries, it’s time to buy new, high-quality cells. We only sell real, high-power batteries from trusted brands, which offer more capacity and safety.
  • Turn Off When Not In Use: Make sure your device is fully turned off (five clicks) when you put it in a pocket or bag. Even a small screen drawing power adds up during the day.
  • Use an External Charger: Buying a multi-slot external charger (available in our accessories section) lets you always have a spare set of batteries ready to swap in, fixing your battery-life problems instantly.

8. Charging Issues

Your vape is plugged in, but the charging light doesn’t turn on, or the battery level barely moves. This is often a port or cable problem, not a dead battery.

How to Fix:

  • Change the Cable and Wall Plug: A bad cable can happen. Try a different, good-quality charging cable and a wall plug you know works. Cheap phone chargers often don’t have enough power for big vape batteries.
  • Clean the Charging Port: Use a dry toothpick or a blast of compressed air to gently remove any lint, dust, or dirt from the charging port (usually USB-C or micro-USB). Dirt stops the cable from connecting well.
  • Avoid Overcharging: Do not leave your device plugged in all night or for more than an hour after it hits 100%. Overcharging stresses the battery and can cause it to fail sooner.

9. Coil Not Detected / “No Atomizer” Error

This is a common error message that means your vape cannot “read” the electrical resistance (Ohms) of your coil. It is almost always a connection problem between the vape and the tank.

How to Fix:

  • Put the Coil and Tank Back In: Unscrew the tank, remove the coil, and firmly but gently screw it back in. Then, screw the tank back onto the vape, making sure it’s a tight connection.
  • Clean the Connections: Use a dry cotton swab to clean the 510 connector on top of your vape (where the tank screws on). Leaked e-liquid or dirt can break the electrical circuit.
  • Try a New Coil: If the steps above fail, the coil itself is probably broken. Even new coils can sometimes have factory defects. Replace it with a fresh, real coil from the reliable packs we sell.
  • Check for Tank Match: Make sure the tank is meant to be used with your specific vape. If you are using a non-standard tank, it might not work with your device’s minimum resistance setting.

10. Gurgling Noise

A gurgling noise, usually with poor vapor, sounds like you are sucking air through water. This is the classic sound of a flooded coil, where too much e-liquid has soaked the cotton and filled the air chamber.

How to Fix:

  • Clear Extra Liquid: Hold the tank upside down, wrap a paper towel around the air holes, and flick your wrist firmly a few times. This forces the extra liquid out of the holes.
  • Gentle Exhale/Blow-Clear: With the air holes open, gently blow into the mouthpiece for a second or two before taking a puff (point the vape away from you!). This pushes extra liquid through the air holes.
  • Check the Airflow Setting: If your tank’s airflow is closed too much, it can limit the air needed to turn the liquid into vapor, causing the coil to flood. Open your airflow slightly.
  • Try Higher VG E-Liquid: Like the spitback fix, a thicker e-liquid will soak in slower, making it less likely to over-soak the coil and cause gurgling.

11. Dry Hits

A dry hit is a less harsh version of a full burnt taste. It’s that slightly rough, metallic, or weak taste that signals the cotton is starting to dry out.

How to Fix:

  • Check Power vs. Soaking: If you are chain vaping (taking many puffs too quickly) at high power, you might be turning the liquid into vapor faster than the cotton can soak it up. Wait 10 to 15 seconds between puffs, or lower the power.
  • Check Thick E-Liquid: If your e-liquid is very thick (high VG), it might struggle to soak into the coil’s cotton fast enough. If you get dry hits often, try a liquid with slightly less VG (like 60% VG instead of 80% VG).
  • Coil Hole Match: Make sure the coil’s liquid holes are fully open to the e-liquid in your tank. Sometimes the coil is slightly crooked after you fill it.

12. Airflow Too Tight or Too Loose

Airflow is a key part of how you vape. It controls how restricted or airy your puff is. If it feels wrong, it ruins the whole experience.

How to Fix:

  • Adjust the Airflow Ring: Most tanks have a ring that you can turn at the bottom. Simply twist this ring to open or close the air holes. For an MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) puff (like a traditional cigarette), close the airflow almost all the way. For a DTL (Direct-to-Lung) cloud puff, open it wide.
  • Clean the Airflow Ports: Dirt, pocket lint, or leaked e-liquid can block the air holes, making the draw too tight. Use a cotton swab to clear any blockage.
  • Check Your Coil Type: If your airflow is fully open, but the draw is still tight, you might be using a high-resistance MTL coil (like 1.0 Ohm) in a DTL tank. Make sure your coil type matches the way you want to puff. We can help you pick the perfect coils.

13. E-Liquid Tasting Off or Muted

Your favorite flavor suddenly tastes bland, weak, or has a strange chemical note. This is usually because a coil is dying or a problem called “vaper’s tongue.”

How to Fix:

  • Change Your Coil (Best Fix): A fresh coil is the best answer for weak flavor. Once a coil is old (usually 10 to 14 days of use), it can no longer make a clean flavor. Stop by our shop for a huge range of coils that boost flavor!
  • Drink Water and Clear Your Taste: If it’s Vaper’s Tongue, you need to reset your taste buds. Drink lots of water, sniff coffee beans (it really works!), or try a very strong mint or menthol flavor for a day to wake up your taste buds.
  • Switch Flavors: Vaping the same flavor for weeks dulls your senses. Switching to a totally different flavor—like going from a creamy dessert to a tart fruit—can often bring your sense of taste back. Explore our 200+ different e-liquid flavors!
  • Check E-Liquid Expiry: E-liquids don’t last forever. Old liquid can break down and taste sour or “off.” Always check the date on your bottle.

14. Overheating Device

Your vape is getting uncomfortably hot to touch. This can be dangerous and is a serious warning sign that needs fixing right away.

How to Fix:

  • Stop Vaping and Cool Down: The first fix is to stop vaping immediately and set the device aside in a cool, open area. Let it cool down completely before using it again.
  • Avoid Chain Vaping: Overheating is often caused by chain vaping (taking too many puffs too quickly), which doesn’t give the coil or battery enough time to let go of heat. Space your puffs out more.
  • Check for a Short Circuit: Overheating can mean there is a short circuit inside the coil or the device. Try replacing your coil. If it keeps happening, the vape itself might be broken and should be replaced.
  • Look at Battery Wraps: If you use separate batteries, look for any tears on the wraps. Damaged battery wraps can cause a dangerous short circuit. We offer free battery re-wrapping services at our shop!

15. Vape Not Producing Flavor

Similar to the muted taste problem, if the flavor is completely gone, it’s often a coil or liquid issue. Flavor comes directly from how well the coil turns the e-liquid into vapor.

How to Fix:

  • Coil is Finished: This is the most likely reason. Residue on the heating part is stopping the flavor from coming through. Just install a new coil—it’s the fastest way to get that rich flavor back.
  • Sweet E-Liquid: Very sweet liquids have more sweetener, which can burn and gunk up the coil fast, leading to an almost instant flavor drop. If you use very sweet liquids, you will need to change your coil more often.
  • Check Power: Make sure your power is within the recommended range. Too low, and the flavor won’t be strong; too high, and the flavor gets burnt. Find the best spot by adjusting in steps of 5W.

16. Button Stuck or Not Working

If the fire button is physically stuck down (auto-firing) or doesn’t register a click when you press it, your vaping session is going nowhere.

How to Fix:

  • Sticky Button: If it’s stuck, it’s probably because of e-liquid leaking into it. Immediately remove the batteries (if separate) or power off the device. Use a clean, dry cotton swab to gently clean around the edges of the button.
  • Unresponsive Button: If it feels fine but doesn’t work, make sure the device is not on a button-lock mode. Some advanced vapes have a separate button-lock feature (often three quick clicks) that stops the fire button from working even when the device is on. Check your manual!
  • Broken Inside: If the button still doesn’t work after cleaning and checking the lock, the internal parts may be damaged. Visit our store, and our experts can figure out the problem.

17. Vape Turning Off Randomly

Your device is fully charged, but it keeps shutting down in the middle of a puff or while sitting still. This is a frustrating sign of problems with internal connections or software issues.

How to Fix:

  • Update Software (Firmware): Some modern vapes with screens have occasional software bugs. Check the maker’s website to see if a software update (firmware) is available. This can often fix random shutdowns and make the vape work better.
  • Loose Battery Contacts: For devices with separate batteries, make sure the battery door is closed tightly and the batteries are touching the contacts firmly. Loose batteries can briefly lose connection, causing the vape to shut down.
  • Overheating Safety: The device might be overheating and shutting itself off as a safety feature. See the “Overheating Device” section above and give the vape time to cool down.

18. Difficulty Drawing / Blocked Airflow

The puff is so tight it feels like you’re sucking a thick milkshake through a small straw, even with the airflow wide open.

How to Fix:

  • Clean the Airway: Remove the tank and the mouthpiece. Use a paper towel to clean the inner walls of the tank’s center tube and the mouthpiece where vapor travels. Condensation and thickened e-liquid often build up there.
  • Check the Airflow Ports: Physically look at the air holes on the tank base for any pocket lint, dirt, or debris. Use a toothpick or blast of air to clear them out.
  • Coil Position: Make sure the coil is sitting correctly. If the coil is slightly crooked, it can block the small internal airflow path. Always make sure the coil is straight and fully seated.

19. E-Liquid Running Out Too Fast

While this isn’t a “malfunction,” it’s a common complaint! If you feel like you are always refilling, it’s about how efficiently your vape works and your choice of coil.

How to Fix:

  • Lower Your Power: High power means you are turning liquid into vapor much faster. Try dropping your power by 10W to see if your tank lasts longer without losing too much vapor.
  • Switch to MTL: DTL (Direct-to-Lung) tanks, especially those with low-Ohm mesh coils, use a huge amount of liquid. Switching to a high-resistance MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) device or coil will use much less liquid. We have great MTL starter kits that are made to be very efficient with liquid.
  • Check for Leaks: A fast-disappearing tank might mean you have a slow, unseen leak. See the “Leaking E-Liquid” section and check that your O-rings are in good shape.

20. Vape Blinking Light (Error Indicator)

The blinking light is your device’s way of telling you that it has found a specific problem. Knowing what the pattern means is the key to fixing it.

How to Fix:

  • Count the Blinks: Read your device’s manual! The number of blinks relates to a specific error. Common patterns include:
    • 3 Blinks: Usually means a short circuit or “No Atomizer” error. Check the coil connection.
    • 10 Blinks: Often a puff duration limit or high-temperature warning. Give the device a rest.
    • Rapid Flashing: Almost always means the battery is very low and needs to be charged right away.
  • Simple Reset: If you can’t figure out the code, remove the tank and the batteries (if separate), wait for 60 seconds, and then replace everything. This can sometimes clear a temporary error. If the error continues after checking the manual, bring it to our experts!
